Acupuncture Effectively Treats Low Back Pain

Patients with low back pain, especially chronic pain, are not taking comfort in staying heavily medicated with pain meds or with the surgical interventions provided to them. People want better and deserve better options to their pain management care.

Surgery is usually the last suggestion after all other options are suggested for pain management and relief. Patients are typically referred to physical therapy from 1-3 months. They may be prescribed NSAIDs or Opioids for pain relief. Cortisol injections and epidurals can be effective in temporarily stopping the pain sensations, but do not treat the damage in the lower back. Even if there is a successful surgery, has the root of the problem really been addressed?

Acupuncture is slowly making its way into doctors minds as a medical option for treating low back pain. However, it is still not the first suggestion made to patients and sometimes is not mentioned at all. This puts patients at a disadvantage as they are not told all their medical options before surgical intervention is suggested.

Recently, the NIH launched a nationwide research study to prove the efficacy of acupuncture in treating chronic low back pain. We hope that with the positive results from this study, it will inspire more confidence in medical doctors to refer patients for acupuncture treatments. We also hope it will help insurance companies improve their eligibility coverage for acupuncture treatments in their health plans across the board.

Here are Yu Dayi Chinese Medicine, we take back pain seriously. We have extensive clinic experience in treating acute and chronic low back cases. Each person is treated uniquely for their particular problem. A number of our patients are surprised by the positive results we obtain in our acupuncture sessions, as we typically have immediate pain relief in the first session. Through the Yu Dayi acupuncture techniques, we are able to see chronic cases resolve within several treatments. It is a case by case scenario for every patient as each body is unique. Each body responds differently to acupuncture.

More difficult cases of spinal injuries that require surgical intervention require a slightly longer treatment plan commitment to help resolve pain and undue the damage in the spine and muscles of the lower back. With the combination of acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas, we are able to help promote the body's healing response and facilitate recovery.

Some of the common low back conditions we treat include:

  • disc herniation

  • nerve root compression

  • sciatica

  • piriformis syndrome

  • spondylothesis

  • slipped disc
